Have you checked your facebook email address? If not yet, you may be in for a surprise.
Facebook, a social network with over 900 million profiles has changed its users email addresses and replaced it with one that ends in '@facebook.com'.
The changeover which happened Tuesday hides email addresses of its millions of users and replaces them with a generic reflecting the sites account.
This implies that anyone who searches for you on Facebook and wants to send an email will now only see @facebook.com - unless you manually revert.
Also, email messages will be received via Facebook messages instead of another account.
Technology bloggers lit up after outraged users noticed the change.
Facebook on their part claim the change is to protect users' privacy and security by not displaying a personal email address but the site's, which is more generic.
“As we announced back in April, we’ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site”, a facebook spokesman said.
“In addition to everyone receiving an address, we’re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines.”
It came as a surprise to many users and has sparked outrage.
“I find the move suspicious especially since they did not give a prior notice before making the changes”, said Joy Chelagat.
“They should have made the changes optional and not automatic because it is a violation of the freedom of choice of its users. I read malice”, lamented a facebook user in Nairobi.
