Nyong'o reinstates NHIF board, CEO

Medical Services minister Prof Anyang' Nyong'o on Sunday revoked the suspension of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) board and the CEO that was effected by the Head of the Public Service Francis Kimemia last week. Read (Troubled NHIF Board suspended) However, Prof Nyong'o did not reinstate NHIF chairman Richard Muga. Prof Nyong'o accused PS Kimemia of overstepping his boundary by suspending the entire NHIF board. “I want to state very clearly, as the Minister of Medical Services that the status quo in NHIF remains following my decision on Thursday. The board and the CEO are under my instructions to continue with their work without interference from any person,” he said. On Friday, Mr Kimemia suspended the NHIF board over the controversial Sh4.2 billion civil servants medical cover scheme. In a statement, Mr Kimemia said Mr Kerich would also be suspended. “This will pave the way for the appointment of a caretaker management board and conducting of investigations into the alleged malpractices in the institution,” he said. “Additional measures will be announced next week.” On Thursday, NHIF CEO Richard Kerich was sent packing by the board but he was immediately reinstated by Medical Services minister Anyang' Nyong'o.
